Solar technologies are especially well suited to urban areas where other technologies may be intrusive or ineffective. However in remote locations or larger properties combination systems incorporating more cost effective technologies may be more suitable. Photovoltaic PV & Thermal panels are essentially the same in external appearance, however are completely different in their operation and use. PV panels generate electrical power for use in the home or business. Thermal panels are heat exchangers they exchange the Suns radiated heat to a fluid medium which is then used for supplying hot water & or heating.
Solar Tile installations may be beneficial where aesthetics are of particular importance e.g.listed properties although this option incurs a premium due to their manufacturing costs. Whatever system is employed a southerly aspect is required for effective installation be it on a roof or as a fixed standalone array, this can be overcome to some extent with a tracker array which can operate up to 20% more efficiently than a static system. Tracking array's are similar to the static versions but have the ability to track the sun as it moves across the sky.
